What is hypnosis?
most people what they think hypnosis actually is and they will automatically
connect with a stage hypnotist on TV seemingly making people “perform”
to amuse the public – seemingly doing everything that the hypnotist
tells them to do.
Peoples' assumption based on this is that they have their mind “controlled”
in some way and that they are themselves “out of control”
and can be made to look silly or stupid by doing something that they
would not normally want or be happy to do.
This is wrong and nothing could be further from the truth in actual
fact. So how do we ( the responsible hypno-analyst) explain hypnosis?
The word Hypnosis actually comes from the Greek word “Hypnos”
which means purely – sleep! A good definition of hypnosis is
as follows :
A state of relaxation
“Hypnosis is the name given to simple method of arriving at
a total state of relaxation ( a hypnotic state) in an individual.
The talking in a certain manner by the hypno-analyst or hypnotist,
alters the state of consciousness of the individual to a point where
in this relaxed or hypnotic state suggestions can be placed in the
subconscious. Past memories could be recalled, or regressions could
be aided to a point of release.”
The emphasis is put on the word RELAXATION as its really just a very
relaxed state that you are brought to. You are brought to this state
by the hypnotist who simply relaxes you using suggestion.
The following are some of the most frequently asked questions that get
asked reagrding hypnotherapy and hypnosis:
What does hypnosis
It is a very deeply relaxed feeling, both mentally and physically
relaxing. Different people feel different things. Other than being
totally relaxed people say they experience feelings of heaviness in
the limbs, or lightness in the limbs or sometimes a tingling sensation
similar to pins and needles. However almost everyone says afterwards
that it’s the most relaxed they have ever felt in their lives.
Are any drugs or tablets used?
Will I remember what has happened
during my session?
Definitely YES ! It surprises people to know that they will remember
all that happens during the therapy. In fact your states of awareness
i.e. hearing, smell, sight are actually heightened during hypnosis.
Am I actually asleep during hypnosis?
No you are not – you are simply very, very relaxed.
Can I speak while in hypnosis?
Yes you can – in fact during any analysis sessions of hypnosis
you are encouraged to speak.
Is hypnosis safe?
Yes. As with any profession it is best to seek out the most professional
and reputable people. Hypnosis in itself isn't dangerous, though you
should not listen to a hypnotic cd or recording whilst driving - for
Can I be made to do something against
This is probably one of the most asked questions and the answer is
DEFINITELY NOT! If something was suggested that was against your will
or your beliefs you would be shocked out of the hypnotic state immediately.
Can you get “stuck” in a hypnotic state?
Will you think my problem or phobia
is silly or crazy?
As an IAH qualified member I have seen and heard most things so you
will not find me, or any of the other IAH Therapists, judgmental at
all. If you feel its silly and affects your everyday life and well
being then its worth doing something about it – and I can help
Last but by no means least:
What if I can't be hypnotized?
Everyone except those heavily under the influence of drugs or alcohol
can be hypnotized. The only thing that varies is the depth of the
relaxed state – some people are naturally more suggestible than
Hypnosis is not a new phenomenon but has been practised in various
states for thousands of years - since the Egyptians and beyond. Whilst
it only became more practised and popular in the 1700 and onwards
it is now regarded as a very effective tool to assist people solve
there “problems of the mind”. Unfortunately it is often
regarded as a “last resort” method of treatment when all
else fails. But it is extremely effective and within the I.A.H we
treat in excess of 250, 000 people each year – successfully!
